By a twist of fate, a young crow once ended up in my hands. I had to decide — let him die, or raise him myself. I chose the latter.


At first, there was some mild resistance from my parents, but once they saw the fight was for the right cause, they let me go on.

Jaak (Jack) was rather helpless in the beginning: he couldn’t fly and cawed without pause. I fed him bread soaked in milk and small fish. He grew strong quickly. When Jaak finally took flight, I felt as though I myself had made a few swift circles beneath the sky.


He turned out to be an unbelievably clever and creative character. His adventures alone could easily fill a proper children’s book, but I made a few charcoal drawings, so Jaak wouldn’t be forgotten.


Jaak lived with us the whole summer. In autumn, as school drew near and I began to wonder what would become of him, He seemed to understand on his own and quickly gathered a gang of wild crows to fly around with and caw in chorus. He was twice their size, and it was instantly clear who the conductor was. By the end of summer, he was spending less time at home and more with his new companions. Before school began, he had abandoned his nest box completely. When I looked inside to see if he had left me any treasure, it turned out he had: Beer caps, cigarette butts, paperclips, colourful bits of plastic, and other scraps. 


The only truly functional item was my grandfather’s purple toothbrush, which had, quite mysteriously, disappeared from the sauna earlier that summer.

This past summer, I moved my drawing practice to a modest studio-shed—part atelier, part tool-cave—where light came in through the dusty windows and the walls smelled faintly of wood and turpentine. It was here, in this quiet enclosure, that I created a new series of large-scale drawings, mostly 70 × 70 cm in size (with one exception that exceeds the format), working with pastels, charcoal, gold leaf, pencil, and, on occasion, ink.

The series emerges as a direct yet transformed continuation of my earlier photo project Maschinenwerke (2019–2025), which documented the quietly collapsing industrial architecture of the collective farm era—structures that were more often improvised than designed, haunted by both utopian intent and neglect. While Maschinenwerke was photographic, analytical, and even archaeological, these new works operate in a different register. They are affective, drawn, and layered with painterly materiality.

In this transition from lens to hand, a tonal shift also occurs: the brutality of concrete and rust is refracted through soft pigment, smoky gesture, and luminous metallic highlights. The works evoke not only decayed industrial memory, but also their ideological residues. Some of these drawings resemble speculative propaganda posters—absurdly ironic in tone—as if advertising the comforts of a remote Soviet labour camp. Stylised references to early 20th-century avant-garde movements—particularly Constructivism and its fragmented visual logic—are not quoted directly, but instead absorbed and quietly distorted, as though remembered through the fog of time or dream.

These drawings insist on a particular technical and stylistic vocabulary. No other approach felt possible; the subject demanded this tension between hand-rendered softness and architectural severity. Upon completing the series, I was struck by a clear sense of closure. This chapter is complete. Something else must begin—and it will, in another form. But these images needed to exist first, as sediment and echo of what Maschinenwerke stirred, and what the summer shed allowed to surface.

Tokyo Reveries

These drawings were made on dark winter evenings at my kitchen table while remembering—or imagining—Tokyo. Some are based on real places I’ve visited, and others drift off into stranger territory where memory and fantasy blur. I’ve used pastels, charcoal, pencil, and occasionally acrylic paint—whatever felt right in the moment. Together, these images form a kind of dream map: part city, part mood, part something else entirely.

Skulls and Bonesdrawn 2015-2025


I've been collecting skulls since I was a child. They've never been morbid—just part of the furniture. Both of my grandfathers were doctors, so having a human skull on a bookshelf at home didn't seem out of the ordinary. One of them encouraged me to read books on palaeontology and led me through zoology museums, where I could marvel at taxidermied animals and skeletal displays like ancient puzzles.

The other grandfather was a hunter, which meant animal skulls, hides, and bones were just as natural a part of my early environment as kitchen chairs or carpet patterns. That childhood blend of science, mystery, and a bit of the wild has stayed with me, and so has the collection.

To this day, I have a soft spot for skulls. Their forms are endlessly fascinating, so complex, yet perfectly functional; so strange, yet unmistakably beautiful. I've drawn them with pencil and charcoal, painted them in oil and ink, scanned and rendered them in 3D software, sculpted them in clay and even made a woodblock-style stump print from one particularly charismatic specimen. Each skull feels like a quiet story waiting to be told, one that begins long before me and still keeps whispering.

In Japan, I sometimes sit on a quiet curb or temple bench, armed with a 0.5 mm mechanical pencil and a tiny balsa wood board, trying to catch bits of architecture before they slip away. It’s a way of understanding buildings—not through blueprints, but by tracing their lines slowly, by hand.
I’m especially fascinated by humble old private houses, which people have built and rebuilt themselves over the years. These homes often bend the rules of logic in the most delightful ways: staircases to nowhere, windows with no view, roofs stacked like improvised poetry. There’s a charming kind of spatial absurdity to them that makes me grin while I draw.
Then there are the temples—calm, intricate, and utterly intimidating. Traditional Japanese timber architecture is a marvel of precision and craft. Sometimes, I sit for an hour, pencil hovering, just trying to figure out where one beam ends and another begins. Drawing them feels like solving a puzzle with too many beautiful pieces—and it often leaves me wondering how on earth anyone ever managed to build the thing in the first place.

The Compulsion Drawer

This is a collection of my spontaneous drawings — the kind that tends to appear on quiet Saturday mornings when I’m still in bed and suddenly feel an irresistible urge to draw… say a potato. The impulse is rarely logical and almost never planned. These images come from whatever odd corners of the subconscious happen to be stirring at the time.

There’s no big concept here, no grand vision — just pure joy. The subjects are random, the ideas instinctive, and the techniques chosen on a whim. This instinctive nature of creativity is something we all share, and it's what makes each piece unique. Pencil, ink, pastel, charcoal — whatever feels right in the moment.
It’s all quite unpolished, unfiltered, and exactly as it should be.

Gyotaku printsprinted and drawn 2016-2025


Gyotaku (魚拓), meaning "fish impression" in Japanese, is a traditional printing technique that dates back to mid-19th-century Japan. It was originally used by fishermen to document their catches—long before smartphones—by applying ink to the fish and pressing it onto paper. The result was a detailed, life-size print—visual proof of the one that didn't get away.

As a devoted fisherman, I got into gyotaku after a suggestion from my mother-in-law. She joked that instead of always showing fish photos on my phone, I should make prints—this way, the size would be there for all to see, with no room for exaggeration. Fair enough.

I started by printing cleaned fish heads and skins in pieces. Eventually, I began inking whole fish directly and taking full-body impressions as it was traditionally done. Over time, I grew restless with the traditional method and began drawing over the prints, turning them into paintings where the fish became both fact and fantasy.

What fascinates me most about gyotaku is how each print, even from the same fish, turns out unique. The choice of paper—especially crinkled or wrinkled—can give the image a fossil-like texture, adding an ancient, almost geological feel to a freshly caught creature.

And yes—every fish you see here was eaten afterward, respectfully and completely. Nothing goes to waste.

2007-2023

I have captured the fading beauty of tiny and old houses in the ever-changing cityscape of Tokyo. These little houses, examples of vernacular architecture in Tokyo, are slowly disappearing, replaced by newer buildings that lack their unique character and charm.
As I wandered through the streets of Tokyo, I stumbled upon these hidden treasures tucked away in narrow alleys or standing resiliently amidst the bustling city. Some are derelict and abandoned, with wild plants reclaiming their territory, while others showcase unconventional designs in unexpected places.
These houses hold stories of the city's past, etched into their walls and preserved in faded glory. They are a testament to the passage of time, standing as witnesses to Tokyo's history. Each house has its own personality, with its history etched into its walls and its mysteries waiting to be unravelled. Each creaky floorboard, each peeling paint, and each weathered texture spoke volumes, capturing my lens with their evocative beauty.

As the city evolves and modernizes, these self-generated houses, built based on the needs and preferences of their owners, are gradually disappearing, taking away a layer of the city's cultural heritage. They represent a disappearing way of life, where the old and new collide, and Tokyo's unique identity is reshaped.


My obsession with these unique houses has resulted in a growing archive of images that keeps expanding! I can't resist taking a snapshot whenever I encounter a good one, which happens often.

Through my lens, I aim to capture and preserve the fading charm of these houses, inviting you to join me on this visual exploration of Tokyo's vanishing architectural heritage. The Waste Temple is a speculative architectural project by Kadarik Tüür Architects that reconceptualizes material waste as a cultural and spatial responsibility extending across millennia, rather than as a hidden inconvenience. The project advocates a fundamental transformation in which waste is no longer relegated to the margins of society but is instead positioned at its symbolic and architectural center.

Central to the proposal is a network of waste depositories envisioned as future quarries. These structures are designed to store the by-products of contemporary consumption for future generations, with the expectation that partially decomposed materials may eventually attain new value. Instead of designating landfills as areas of exclusion, the project recommends situating them in locations intended for future habitation. Consequently, waste distribution is reframed as a strategy for long-term regional planning that influences future settlement patterns.

To facilitate this model of intergenerational stewardship, the project introduces a novel religious framework. While traditional belief systems venerate ancestors, the Waste Temple advocates for ritualized reverence toward future generations. The act of bringing waste to the temple is framed as purification, symbolizing the alleviation of the moral burden associated with consumption and participation in a collective aftercare initiative. In this context, religion is employed not as satire, but as a serious institutional model intended to sustain responsibility across extended temporal horizons.

The prototype temple is located in central Tallinn, on the site of Tammsaare Park. Designed as a multi-level underground stepwell, the structure integrates public outdoor areas, ritual interiors, and deeper storage layers. Primarily constructed from wood, the building acknowledges the impermanence of materials and anticipates its eventual decomposition and re-extraction in the distant future. The temple is conceived as part of a global network, adaptable to a variety of cultural and environmental contexts.

The project intentionally addresses the moral contradictions inherent in consumer society. Ritualized disposal enables individuals to persist in consumption with a sense of absolution; however, the system is anticipated to evolve toward greater asceticism and restraint over time. The proposed religious framework functions as an unstable regulator, capable of either curbing or promoting consumption in response to prevailing societal conditions.

The Waste Temple does not claim to provide a technical solution to the waste crisis or offer redemption. Rather, it establishes a speculative framework for considering responsibility on a temporal scale that surpasses human life, architecture, and even civilization itself. Interpreted as architecture, the proposal is radical. When viewed as scripture, the accompanying images shift from illustrations to icons, serving as artifacts of a belief system oriented toward deep time.
